Houses under construction currently at Neighbourhoods Of Devonshire & Sally Creek in Woodstock
Building standards for Claysam far exceed building code requirements
By Mark Schadenberg
Woodstock has many great home builders
– all three of the Deroo brothers, Heritage, Reyneveld, Oxford
Builders and the list goes on.
However, only one local builder has
received recognition as a Mike Holmes approved builder.
Claysam Homes builds detached homes and
freehold townhouses in Woodstock. Claysam also has significant
projects in nearby Plattsville, plus Elmira. In Woodstock, Claysam is
found both at Neighbourhoods of Devonshire (East of Lansdowne) and
Sally Creek (west side of Highway 59; north of Pittock Lake)
subdivisions.
Often you hear the adage going “above
and beyond expectations”. In the home building business, this would
translate into higher efficiency homes that exceed building codes.
Owner Sam Scicluna knows a top notch
home is more than just craftsmanship.
“We have always been confident in the
product and service we provide for our customers,” says Scicluna in
the most recent southwestern Ontario edition of the New Home &
Condo Guide (Volume 18, Issue 16).
It's interesting to note that the
magazine based in Etobicoke (416 626-4200 to subscribe or advertise),
is published by The Yellow Pages.
As for Claysam, the recommendation from
well-known Canadian home expert Mike Holmes is an important selling
feature.
“It was reassuring to know that
someone like Mike Holmes who stands for quality craftsmanship wanted
to stand behind our product,” Scicluna added. “We were chosen by
Mike out of many other builders in our area as a company he wanted to
support, one who does it right the first time.”
In Woodstock, both Claysam locations
are represented by Royal LePage Triland Realty sales rep William
Cattle (519 868-6447). Our provincial real estate advertising
standards quite honestly would not permit me to promote this local
good news item if another office had the listings. Cattle and Claysam
have been a team for quite a few years now.
According to Cattle, who is also the
current Woodstock-Ingersoll real estate board president, the Holmes
news-construction inspection system is very thorough and
comphrensive, and includes a checklist much stricter than the
building code.
Scicluna says that part of the Holmes
seal of approval is an inspection of houses to confirm they meet his
standards, which are far above the building code requirements.
“Our homes will undergo a series of
Holmes inspections providing our home owners with transparent proof
that their home has been built to be safer, stronger and more durable
thanks to superior construction practices,” Says Scicluna.
Holmes was also quoted in the New Home
& Condo Guide story.
“I've been a contractor for over 30
years and I know what can go wrong when a home isn't built right.
That's why I've team up with industry-leading builders . . . who
understand why I build to my standards. Together, we are going above
industry standards. . . ”
The Holmes inspection system is unique
as it includes as many as six checks at the house at various stages
of construction. Read the www.claysamhomes.com
website for more details, but the program integrates observations and
tests which consider the home's structure, but also its internal
environment (air quality) to prevent future mould, which thereby
results in a healthier house. The various stages of construction
include checking the foundation, HVAC, wiring and plumbing, plus
window installation and insulation levels, but the list is certainly
even more extensive.
Mike Holmes became famous through the
TV show Holmes On Homes (HGTV), but his popularity has evolved to
include TV appearances on handyman shows, an author of at least 4
books, and now a large home inspection system for both re-sale and
new homes. In 2010, a Reader's Digest survey calculated that Holmes
was Canada's second most trusted person (behind only David Suzuki).
With 117,000 followers on Twitter (@Make_It_Right), it's quite
apparent that Mike Holmes is both popular and respected.

NEW HOME & CONDO GUIDE
The most recent editions also has
features on various subdivisions in southern Ontario, including
Kitchener-Waterloo, London, St Catharines, Niagara Falls and
Hamilton. While on the surface it's a glossy magazine comprised
solely of advertisements and advertorials, the publication is an
excellent way to promote the home construction industry in this area
as the current edition also plugs other names people know in this
economic sector, such as Reid's Heritage Homes, Fusion Homes and
Mattamy Homes.
The magazine also includes subdivision
maps.
The focus is also closely on a builder
I had never heard about previously. Losani Homes is busy with
multi-dwelling areas in Paris, Ancaster and Stone Creek.
There is also a community feature. The
current magazine features Burlington as a “thriving” city.
As for the Yellow Pages group of
publications, they also compile the industry-important The Home
Builders Annual.
