Swimming, skating and so much more in FAIR program
By Mark Schadenberg
The City of Woodstock runs several programs obviously, but not many
that are sports or recreation related.
Swimming lessons, skating lessons and summer camps are all operated by
the City and funded by tax dollars.
However, sports such as hockey, figure skating, minor ball, soccer and
gymnastics are operated by community-run groups which have executives and
volunteer committees.
For families seeking financial assistance to enroll in minor hockey,
for example, there is the Jump Start program and other avenues available.
The City’s parks and recreation department led by Brian Connors, meanwhile,
went to city council with a report last week describing a program he would like
to see utilized locally to enable lower income families to be able to
participate more in locally operated activities such as swimming lessons.
At council on Sept. 5, a motion was passed to create a $10,000 fund to
initiate this Fee Assistance In Recreation (FAIR) fund.
This project was just one of many items on the recreation advisory committee meeting I attended this week.
