Many categories to suggest names: retail, commercial, entrepreneur, franchisee . . .
Annual dinner and banquet is scheduled for Nov. 2 at Oxford Auditorium

Hard
work and a diligent pursuit toward accomplishment deserve to be recognized and it
doesn’t matter if you’re an athlete or a business person.
The
Woodstock District Chamber of Commerce (www.woodstockchamber.ca)
is currently seeking nominations for the 2016 Awards Of Excellence night set
for Nov. 2 at the Oxford Auditorium at the fairgrounds.
There
are 17 categories to consider, so now is a good time to put on your thinking
cap (When I go to Stratford Festival I call it my Shakespeare helmet) and decide
if you know of a business or person which deserves to be honoured this year.
The interesting angle to the dinner night is that those in attendance vote in many of the categories.
Feel
free to visit the website for background info on each category – retail,
manufacturing, trades person, food services, energy conservation, entrepreneur,
community involvement, and new or emerging business (etc.).
Winning in 2015 in the community
services category was Southgate Centre, while outstanding manufacturing award
went to Hino Motors which builds trucks in Woodstock, while the commercial
award went to Great Northern Insulation.
A
full description of each category can be seen online. A list of some past
recipients can also be seen there and by clicking on Sentinel-Review story links below.
One
award, which the current Chamber chairperson and board decides on, is the
President’s Award, which you could say is parallel to a Hall Of Fame
recognition to long-time businesses and associations. Past honourees include: Jay
Heaman in 2015 as he was the long-time general manager of Woodstock Hydro.
Back
in 2013, the President’s Award was smartly given to Jim Stevens as the local
businessman has always promoted this area and stayed local with his growing technology
business called: Execulink.
Some 2014 Winners:
Also
in 2013, other winners included Oxford Source For Sports, Oxford Movers, Oxford
Sand & Gravel, Lloyd’s Electric, Sebastian’s Pizza & Noodle Factory,
Shoppers Drug Mart, and Cornell Welding.
As
you can see, it’s certainly an event where hard work, community efforts,
entrepreneurship and business acumen are all highlighted. Noted below are links
to the Woodstock Sentinel-Review stories from past Chamber awards nights –
2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
If
you’re not a member of the Chamber, this would be a great time to join for the
association’s events, networking and connections, resources, advocacy, and
member to member discounts. The monthly Business After Five events are a great
way to communicate with other local business people. For example, if you’re
looking for a personal business planner, I’m sure you will find one at the
first meeting you attend.
Chamber
events also include an annual golf tournament, along with breakfast meetings
with guest speakers such as the annual Woodstock mayor event. A full schedule
of Chamber events is also on their website.
