Book is penned by sports journalist / broadcaster Jim Lang
By Mark Schadenberg
A memoir chronicling the pro hockey
career of Tie Domi has hit the book shelves from coast to coast.
As a winger with the Maple Leafs, New
York Rangers and the original Winnipeg Jets, I'm convinced that
writer / broadcaster Jim Lang had no troubles compiling a collection
of anecdotes, interviews with past teammates, and recollections of
the 2002 playoffs to sew together the Domi yarn of a hockey sweater.
The book is called: Shift Work and is
published by Simon & Schuster.

It's impossible to battle 16 years in
the NHL and be listed at 5'10” and not have a ton of skill, passion
and determination to become one of the best-known hockey stars of the
past 20 years. Tie Domi appeared in 1020 games, collected 104 goals
and earned 245 points. The stat which is likely most notable,
however, is the 3515 penalty minutes because that total is the third
highest ever, behind only Tiger Williams (3966) and Dale Hunter
(3563).
Mentioning Dale Hunter here is integral
as Tie's son Max just completed 4 seasons with the London Knights, so
I was able to get to know the Max and Tie dynamic to some degree as I
interviewed Max Domi at least a dozen times for either Rogers TV or
Canadian Press.
Max Domi – believe me – will be a
long-time NHL star as his career progresses with the Arizona Coyotes.
The younger Domi had 102 points with the OHL's Knights last season
and counted 126 goals and 331 points in only 244 games, winning OHL
titles in both 2012 and 2013, and earning the Mickey Renaud Captain's
Trophy last season as recognition as the league's top captain for
leadership and dedication.
This blog entry today, however, is
about Tie Domi and the novel ideal of writing a novel and calling it
Shift Work.

You may want to read about Tie's
connection to Tillsonburg, growing up in the Belle River area (His
parents were from Albania), and playing for the Maple Leafs – most
especially the 86 playoff game appearances for the blue and white.
In the link below from CBC radio and
the Metro Morning show hosted by Matt Galloway, Tie Domi discusses
the passing of friends Bob Probert and Wade Belak, plus the influence
Mark Messier had on him when with the Rangers, his glowing thoughts
on Leafs captain Mats Sundin, his recalling of time in the OHL with
the Peterborough Petes, and how hockey has evolved both in junior and
the NHL.
I'm going to have to pick up a copy of
Shift Work because even though I've only had very brief discussions
with Tie in London at The Bud, I most certainly have a true
admiration for someone who displayed immense fortitude, limitless
energy and a magnetic personality to become such a recognizable NHL
star. As mentioned I have not read the book yet, but do want to
promote it to hockey fans as the sport is a true team game and Tie
Domi in his radio interview talked passionately about being
“accountable to teammates.”
A just-released book of importance also
receives a parallel promotional tour from its publisher and Tie Domi
will also be giving back to the fans as his 20-stop tour will include
a transport truck full of hockey memorabilia. The Shift Work date for
Kitchener and Cambridge is Nov. 10, and for London is Friday, Nov 13
(including 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Budweiser Gardens where Knights will
host Guelph Storm). Check the web link for a full list of Domi's
dates and destinations.
With Max Domi thriving in hockey
despite having Type I Diabetes, Tie's charitable causes include
Diabetes research, Christmas toy drives for needy children, Variety
Village in the GTA, and the Rose Cherry Home efforts led by Don
Cherry.
Tie Domi is retired as an active
battler of course, but he will have a tussle this week with puck
broadcaster Ron MacLean as the top selling Canadian non-fiction prose
on store shelves currently is Hockey Towns by MacLean and Kirstie
McLellan Day (HarperCollins)
