Gigantic trade show covers all sectors of the agricultural economy
By Mark Schadenberg
A good friend of mine, who is a dairy
farmer, will refer to me as a 'city slicker'. I resemble that remark.
I do admit to learning the basics about
production quota.
The annual Canada's Outdoor Farm Show
arrives in Woodstock next week – Sept. 15 - 17 (8:30 a.m. - 5
p.m.), and I'm surely attending at least one day as a barbecue
flipper at the giant cafeteria as operated by a consortium of 15 - 17
Lions Clubs in the region.
From the tourism side, the farm show is
gigantic for Woodstock as all the rooms in the inns in Woodstock and
Ingersoll will be booked, and I'm sure some exhibitors will likely be
forced to make reservations at a London hotel.
From an agricultural viewpoint, this
trade show is gigantic as all sectors of the industry are spotlighted
– feed and seeds, to equipment and the environment, to herds of
livestock and barn construction.
The home page of the website covers the
bases by saying the farm show is 'Where Farmers Meet' and notes there
will be over 750 exhibits and that last year the three-day event
attracted more than 42,000 patrons.
Every year, the innovations are
different and the on-site demonstrations vary, so those involved in
agriculture likely return annually. There was a time when robotic
milking was considered innovative, but I'm sure it's now common.
The ag. trade show takes place within
the boundaries of the City of Woodstock at the corner of the 17th Line (Tolgate Road) and Oxford Road 11. (From London direction, you
will take Highway 2 and then drive north on Road 11 before actually
arriving in the city. From north of Woodstock, it's south on Hwy 59).

Admission is $17, and children 6-17 are
$5. Since there literally is too much to see in one day or if there
is something to see for a second time, visitors can buy a second-day
pass for $10. Parking is free.
Woodstock and Oxford County is often
referred to as the Dairy Capital of Canada, and this agriculture
show, which is now in its 22nd year, certainly assists in
this area maintaining its very strong position in the heart of the
southern Ontario farm belt.
