Add gigantic video site YouTube (www.youtube.com)
to the long list of vehicles Tourism Oxford is using to promote our
county as a destination to visit and live in.
I love the creative slogans “Our
rural roots are showing”, “unique communities and places in
between” and “easy to get to . . . hard to leave.”
Terrific brochures, including a very
well designed 64-page publication called Oxford: Back Road
Adventures, are available throughout Oxford and beyond, or could be
downloaded from www.tourismoxford.ca.
Twitter (@tourismoxford), Facebook and
a wordpress blog are also utilized also by Tourism Oxford as the
association continues to push open the limits to promote the many
events and attractions here in southern Ontario.
I can list a dozen annual events(off
the top of my head) in and around Woodstock which attract visitors –
Renaissance Festival, The Wood Show, Cowapolooza
(www.cowapolooza.com), Canterbury Folk Festival (Ingersoll;
www.canterburyfolkfestival.on.ca), Outdoor Canada Farm Show
(www.outdoorfarmshow.com), Canada Day, Highland Games (Embro),
Turtlefest (Tillsonburg; www.turtlefest.ca), Harvest Festival
(Ingersoll) and even the world crokinole championships
(www.worldcrokinole.com)
in Tavistock annually. This listing doesn't even include on-going
entertainment venues such as museums, various art galleries, Theatre
Woodstock (www.theatrewoodstock.com), ITOPA (Ingersoll;
www.itopa.ca), and performances by the Fanshawe Singers or Ingersoll
Choral Society.
The lists and categories are endless
and the task of compiling the info is daunting and I believe Tourism
Oxford needs to be applauded for their all-encompassing coverage and
promotion of events. If you event is not in their website listing –
submit it.
On-going attractions also include
Tillsonburg's Lake Lisgar (www.lakelisgarwaterpark.ca), Woodstock's
Pittock Conservation Area (www.thamesriver.on.ca), Walter's Family
Dinner Theatre (www.walterstheatre.com), Leeping Deer Adventure Farm
(www.leepingdeer.com),
Snyder's Family Farm, and miles upon miles of (Oxford County Trails
Council says 98 kilometres, but it must be more.) scenic nature
trails for cycling, birding, hiking and camping.
As for the more-than 20 YouTube videos,
when you search out the clips, you will see there is again a
covering-all-the-bases cross-section of plugs for rural destinations
and country stores, sports stops including golf courses, plus
farming, arts, crafts, fine dining, pubs, and a profile of a restored
mill in Harrington.
I mention covering bases as any visit
to Oxford would not be complete without a stop at the Beachville
District Museum (www.beachvilledistrictmuseum.ca)
as Beachville is the site of the first-ever recorded baseball game
back in 1838. That particular museum is unique as on-going exhibits
also include mastedon bones, antique toys and the history of local
mining.
