Toyota builds 5 millionth vehicle in Canada
CAMBRIDGE – Toyota celebrated another big milestone on Monday.
It produced its five millionth vehicle in Canada – a red Lexus RX350 crossover that rolled off the line Monday afternoon at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s Lexus plant in Cambridge.
“From humble beginnings, today TMMC is a globally respected manufacturing operation that can produce more than 500,000 vehicles per year,” Ray Tanguay, the company’s chair, said in a statement.
“Our success has allowed us to create more good jobs for Canadians and become a better corporate citizen for our community.”
Toyota started making vehicles in Canada in October 1988, in a plant in Cambridge that originally was designed to produce 50,000 cars a year. Now, it makes more than 500,000 vehicles a year in plants in Cambridge and Woodstock.
Toyota noted that it builds two vehicles in Canada for every vehicle it sells here.
The company, which makes the Corolla, Matrix and Lexus RX350 in Cambridge and the RAV4 in Woodstock, employs more than 6,500 people in the two cities.
Due to previously announced expansions, it plans to add another 400 jobs in Woodstock by January and another 400 in the Lexus operation in Cambridge by January 2014.
Reason to Relocate
If you're a Toyota employee, and plan to move to Woodstock or elsewhere in Oxford County in the near future. . . I have a plan to assist you in the move, including benefits from local businesses and contacts with a team of contractors, mortgage reps, lawyers, and inspectors. I know Woodstock and area, and I know you will enjoy living here and raising your family.
