Participants can complete 1 of 4 different distances

When
the top 10 list of influential Canadians was released for our nation’s 150th birthday from Confederation, it was obvious Terry Fox would be on that list.
The
annual Terry Fox Run in Woodstock is Sunday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.
Appropriately,
the run will have its start and finish at the Terry Fox Memorial Track at
College Avenue Secondary School.
Participants
can register online and also collect pledges from the website www.terryfox.org
by easily searching through the run site locator.
The
local event is organized by a strong committee of volunteers as led by
co-chairs John Versaevel and Peter Oswald. The Lions Club of Woodstock is once
again acting as financial and manpower coordinators as the guidelines for The
Terry Fox Run coast-to-coast includes 100% of funds collected going to the
Terry Fox Foundation.
The
distances to run or walk include 10, 5, 2.5 and 1 km. With the event at CASS,
anyone completing the shortest distance will simply walk the track, while the
longer courses include a map (volunteer marshals will be on the course) with a
jog through Southside Park.
Registrations
begin at 9 a.m. If you are able to begin your Run after 10 a.m., volunteers do
remain in place for a couple hours.

“We
are very proud of the large number of volunteers we have for this year’s
event,” says Versaevel. “The street signs and posters have been out since the
middle of the summer, so we expect to host another successful Terry Fox Run.”
In
advance, Versaevel thanks the City of Woodstock for closing a portion of Finkle
Street around Southside Park for those running competitively, and gratitude to
many other local sponsors.
“Terry
Fox is a very important Canadian hero, and even 36 years after his death his
foundation and the Marathon Of Hope continues to raise millions of dollars to
fund many cancer research projects,” says Versaevel. “Terry Fox’s legacy was
all about ‘hope’ and each year’s Run keeps that ‘hope’ alive.”
The
Marathon Of Hope began in Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 and ended Sept. 1st
of that year after a diagnosis of lung cancer. Terry Fox ran 5,373 km over 143
days. His fundraising marathon brought him to Woodstock on July 16, 1980.

Terry
Fox quotes:
“I
believe in miracles. I have to.”
“I’ve
said to people before that I’m going to do my very best to make it, I’m not
going to give up. But I might not make it… if I don’t, the Marathon of Hope
better continue.”
“There
can be no reason for me to stop. No matter what pain I suffer, it is nothing
compared to the pain of those who have cancer, of those who endure treatment.”
