Cowapolooza marks 15 years by bringing in Colin James

Woodstock festival is about music, but also family fun like buskers and a soap box derby

Toboggan hill in Southside Park is a terrific outdoor venue for free concerts

By Mark Schadenberg
I was wondering this past spring what news was up Brad Janssen’s sleeve?
It turns out it was an ‘ace’ as the City of Woodstock announced Colin James would be the top billing for a free concert at Cowapolooza on Saturday, Aug 13.
This is the 15th year for the music festival in the city’s gem outdoor destination called Southside Park – an event which also includes many family activities.
Janssen is the coordinator of all city-hosted events, ranging from the Victoria Day parade to Canada Day fireworks to the Woodstock sports wall of fame ceremonies.
It’s obvious that no budget would exist in Woodstock for bringing in a AAA star such as Avril, Alanis or Adams, but Colin James is a music superstar in Canada with a discography dating back to 1988 and a strong string of hits such as Five Long Years, Far Away Like A Radio, Just Came Back, Voodoo Thing and a cover version of the Van Morrison track Into The Mystic.
James has won 6 Juno Awards, including male vocalist of the year in both 1991 and 1996.
James, who will turn 52 on Aug. 17 on is originally from Saskatchewan, has a blues rock style unique in Canadian music. However, his versatility can also be seen in the 3 records knows as Colin James and The Little Big Band.

COWAPOLOOZA
The Cowapolooza list of events is impressive. It’s a natural to place emphasis on a cow as Oxford County and Woodstock are known as the Dairy Capital Of Canada
Saturday
Soap Box Derby begins at 9 a.m. and runs down the Finkle Street hill.
Extreme Sports Jam is set for 10 a.m.
Nagata Shachu is a Japanese drumming ensemble and they will perform at 3:30 p.m.
Cow Milking competition usually around 3 p.m.
Stongman / Strongwoman Competitions begins at noon.
Bike Boy (Sean Bridges) is an entertainer on the smaller stage throughout the afternoon with 2 sets. (1 p.m. and 4:30) Everyone loves someone who eats fire while juggling on a unicycle. I hope no trees will be cut down in Southside Park as busker Bike Boy does use a chainsaw during his show.
Op Drift is a band from the Netherlands performing at 2 p.m.
Fun includes pony rides, small children’s rides, crafter’s alley, and my place to volunteer at the Lions Club beer garden.
Check the website for full details
Opening act for Colin James is Tim Tyler at 7 p.m. Could you say Tim Tyler Band is ‘back by popular demand’ as they also were among the 2009 performers.
Colin James is on stage around 8:30. James will play the next night (Aug 14) in Muskoka’s Gravenhurst and actually arrives in Woodstock after completing a tour through British Columbia, including Burnaby.

Friday
The Friday night concert at 8 p.m. will focus on 3 cover bands, including the country music of today and yesteryear with Amberley Beatty as she is Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Gretchen Wilson. The show also includes Keith Martin as Buddy Holly and Joe Passion as Jerry Lee Lewis.
Owning the stage at 7 p.m. will be performers from the Ontario NewTal (new talent) series as promoted by Jack London (who is an established John Denver cover artist). A large crowd at an outdoor venue in a community the size of Woodstock is a great opportunity for someone like Faith James (www.longstory.ca) to continue her climb to the top.

Previous headliners for Cowapolooza have included Trooper, April Wine, The Stampeders and Beverley Mahood.
